NEW YORK, NY, December 21, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Have you endured jaw pain for years with no physician being able to properly diagnose you and relieve you of your pain? Does this pain hinder your ability to perform at your job, or does it make simple, daily routines such as speaking, smiling and eating painful? Do you also experience chronic migraine headaches? It's possible that your jaw is misaligned and you're one of 40 million Americans suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.

If this is the case, you need to consult with a neuromuscular dentist who can properly diagnose you, re-align your bite and treat your Temporomandibular Joint Disorder. As opposed to a general dentist who evaluates and cleans your teeth, bones and gums and diagnoses diseases, a neuromuscular dentist:

• Examines and treats the hard and soft tissues, nerves and muscles that enable your jaw and mouth to operate
• Ensure that your temporomandibular joint, which connects your upper and lower jaws, functions properly—and to diagnose and treat it, if it does not

Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

With a misaligned temporomandibular joint, you are likely to experience pain in the most basic of jaw motions. Unfortunately, the symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder are difficult to pinpoint for even the most skilled doctors, which causes numerous misdiagnoses and prevents sufferers from seeking treatment with a neuromuscular dentist.

Common symptoms are:

• Headaches upon waking
• Insomnia
• Jaw clicking, locking or popping
• Inexplicable stuffiness or earaches
• Centralized pain behind your eyes
• Constant ear ringing
• Loose and/or painful teeth
• Tingling in your fingers
• Stiffness in the jaw
• Persistent and inexplicable neck or shoulder pain
• Chronic migraines

If you suffer from many of the above symptoms, it's imperative that you consult with a neuromuscular dentist to relieve you of your pain and before more extensive damage is inflicted.

Can't See A Neuromuscular Dentist Yet?

While you should schedule an appointment as quickly as possible, there are some home remedies at your disposal to alleviate your pain.

• Change your diet to consist of a good, well-balanced diet cooked whole grains, fruits and vegetables, cheese, eggs, fish etc. Difficult to chew foods such as apples, hard-crusted bread, steak will aggravate your temporomandibular joint disorder and cause you pain
• Ice packs will reduce your pain. Get into a relaxing environment and rest them over your temples for ten minutes, three to four times a day
• Change your sleep positions. Sleeping on your stomach is the worse position for your temporomandibular joint disorder. Sleep on your side or back
• Maintain good posture while standing and sitting. While sitting, avoid resting your chin on the palm of your hand
• Place your fist underneath your jaw when yawning to prevent you from opening your mouth excessively
• Hold the telephone while speaking on it rather than using the crook of your neck to support it

While these home remedies are able to provide temporary relief, by consulting with a neuromuscular dentist, you will be able to have the cause of your pain diagnosed, begin a treatment plan and have your temporomandibular joint re-aligned.
