William Garrison Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Social Work

William Garrison spent much of his career as a social worker and cemetery executive in Cleveland, Ohio and as a 60-year volunteer with the BSA on the local, regional and national levels



    LYNDHURST, OH, January 27, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William Garrison has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. William Garrison is a retired cemetery executive and social worker who accrued more than 45 years of overall professional experience before his retirement in 2008. He began working as a youth minister for St. John's United Church of Christ in Evanston, Ill. in 1962 after earning a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. While working in this capacity, he started postgraduate studies at Garrett Theological Seminary. Mr. Garrison then became a caseworker for the Municipal Court of Chicago. He took this experience to Pennsylvania, where he was a caseworker for the United Cerebral Palsy Association in Philadelphia and completed further postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1967, Mr. Garrison earned a Master of Social Work from Florida State University and relocated to Ohio to become a psychiatric social worker for Bellefaire in Shaker Heights. After seven years in this position, he spent the majority of his career based in Cleveland, Ohio. His roles included director of personnel and director of resource development for the Center of Human Services. He attended the Weatherhead School of Management at CWRU to earn his MSM and he became executive director of the Cleveland Society for the Blind, and executive director of Cleveland Eye Bank. He became an accredited personnel manager in 1977.

Mr. Garrison worked with the Lake View Cemetery Foundation from 1985 to 2005, holding the positions of vice president and chief operating officer, while serving as chief executive officer and president for the Lake View Cemetery Association. He became a certified cemetery executive through the International Cemetery and Funeral Association in 1997. He is a past president of the Greater Cleveland Cemetery Association and the Ohio Association of Cemetery Superintendents and Officials. Mr. Garrison is a co-founder of the national Historic Cemetery Alliance.

In 2007, Mr. Garrison returned to his social work roots to spend a year as executive director of the Shaker Heights Youth Center. His many professional affiliations include the National Association of Social Workers, the American Society of Association Executives and the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Mr. Garrison has remained active with numerous civic organizations over the years including Rotary International and Eat Cleveland Township Cemetary Foundation. He is a recipient of multiple awards from the Boy Scouts of America, such as the District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaver Award, the Silver Antelope Award, the Silver Buffalo Award, the Whitney M. Young Service Award, and the Cliff Dochterman Rotary & Scouting Service Award.

Mr. Garrison's accomplishments were taken into consideration when he was chosen to be featured in the 3rd edition of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, the 1st through 3rd editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 21st through 25th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest. He has also appeared in several editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, and Who's Who in the World.
