William J. Sherman Recognized by Marquis Who's Who as a Leader in Emergency Management in Industry

SAN JOSE, CA, January 16, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- William J. Sherman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who Biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Sherman is regarded for his 29 years of diverse management experience leading to his position as Corporate Business Recovery Manager at Intel Corp. from 1992 to his retirement in 1996. His previous leadership in earthquake preparedness, as a portion of his responsibility as Facilities Engineering Manager at Intel's headquarters site, was recognized following the 1989 6.9 magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake 22 miles away. Despite 63 regional deaths, property damages of $6 billion, and untold disruption, 23 of Intel's 25 buildings were inspected for safety and opened for business for their 4500 employees the next morning, 15 hours later. No deaths or injuries occurred, and it cost Intel less than $100k in total cost. This nationally acknowledged program evolved in the next 3 years until Mr. Sherman successfully persuaded Senior Corporate Management that Intel needed to expand it to all sites for all risks. By 1995 it was in place and used by the company to manage rapid recovery worldwide following 10 different events, saving the company millions of dollars.

During the 1990's his expertise was acknowledged through invitations to provide training, speeches, and technical articles. He was on the Organizing Committee for the first 4 US-Japan Conferences on Corporate Earthquake Programs, the advisory board for the National Institute for Urban Search and Rescue, and chaired a regional organization, the Peninsula Roundtable for Earthquake Preparedness. Following his retirement from Industry in 1996, he reactivated PREP for 3 more years and joined the advisory committee to develop a Certificate Program in Emergency Management used by the University of California's Santa Cruz Extension in Silicon Valley. At their request he developed and taught the segment on Business Continuity Planning until the program was disbanded in 2001. In 1998, he was asked to speak in Washington, D.C. to a Clinton White House Subcommittee searching for a way to encourage public-private partnerships in preventing and managing the effects of major natural disasters. He provided a list of 8 partnerships already functional in the San Francisco Bay Area to manage earthquakes.

In 2015, he came out of retirement when a local water retailer proposed an unworkable set of penalties to supposedly encourage conservation during a drought in their service area. This evolved into an ongoing battle against an existing private (SJWC) /public regulator (CPUC) partnership that costs ratepayers more than 33 cents in pretax profits for every dollar they pay for their water. He continues to be aligned with an advocacy group, WRATES, to educate customers and counter the 20% annual rise in rates, 8 times faster than the local cost of living increase. We believe a pre-tax profit of $100 million on revenue of under $400 million for a necessity of life is excessive and unethical.

Mr. Sherman began his career by earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1960. His focus changed to technical management after he and his wife Joan moved to the San Francisco area in 1962 and he joined the Chemical Systems Division of United Technologies. He subsequently earned an MBA degree in 1971 from San Jose State University. At CSD, he progressed rapidly through a series of Engineering, Supervisory, and Management positions with this Aerospace solid rocket manufacturer. In his last 8 years before moving to Intel in 1981, he was Plant Operations Manager, responsible for over 200 employees who provided all necessary facilities and operational support for a site of 5100 acres containing 110 separate facilities and about 1000 total employees, engaged in manufacturing and R&D.

Mr. Sherman attributes his success to attention to detail and lifelong learning from a variety of people and sources. He is a member of MENSA and is listed in the 1993/94 registry of global business leaders by Who's Who Worldwide.
