PVC has often been publicly attacked for its potentially adverse environmental effects making his non-toxic invention an achievement in technology and environmentalism. For his contributions, Dr. Starnes was the first academic to receive the Roy T. Gottesman Leadership Award from the Vinyl Institute. Dr. Starnes has also been distinguished with numerous accolades throughout his career, including being named a Distinguished Alumni Scholar by Union College and being inducted into the Plastics History and Artifacts Program by the Plastics Pioneers Association, the Hall of Distinction at the Virginia Tech College of Science, and the Southwest Virginia Walk of Fame. He has also been presented with the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Honor Scroll Award from the New Jersey Institute of Chemists, the Polymer Science Pioneer Award by Polymer News, the Distinguished Technical Staff Award from AT&T Bell Laboratories, and the Professional Progress Award from the Society of Professional Chemists and Engineers.
