Mr. Coghill is a retired defense lawyer who dedicated 43 years of legal service as a partner with Thompson Coburn in Belleville, Illinois. He is also proud of achieving a juris doctorate in four and a half years instead of the customary six at the University of Missouri. Mr. Coghill's area of expertise is product liability. He now spends his time writing correspondence, and enjoys the company of his five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Born in St. Louis to William Thomas and Mildred Mary Coghill, Mr. Coghill attended the University of Missouri as an undergraduate, leaving to serve with the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. As the war drew to an end, Mr. Coghill returned to complete his studies and earned a JD in 1950. Mr. Coghill was inspired to study law as a step toward politics, and sought to build a good background with political science and legal study. As a first step, he began with a private practice based in Farmington, Missouri, and was recruited by the FBI in 1951 as a special agent. In 1952, he became a partner of Smith, Smith & Coghill in Farmington, which lasted until 1957. He married Patricia Lee Hughes in 1948, and had three children.
Mr. Coghill moved on to the firm of Coburn & Croft in St. Louis, this time as an associate. The firm would merge with Thompson & Mitchell to become Thompson Coburn, where Mr. Coghill served for many years. During this time he authored two books, titled "Illinois Products Liability" and "Cavaliers." In addition to the American College of Trial Lawyers, Mr. Coghill is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois Bar Association, and the Missouri Bar Association. For distinction in American law, Mr. Coghill was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law. He has also written a book of memoirs.
