BUFFALO, NY, June 11, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- After years of publishing short fiction and poetry and seeing his plays staged, Buffalo native and Edgar award-winning author, Gary Earl Ross reaches for the brass ring with his first novel. Praised for its poetic language, historical accuracy and heart-pumping suspense, early reviews suggest Blackbird Rising may prove to be his break-out novel.
EURBlackbird Rising is a daring and ingenious book, richly imagined and vividly told. Gary Earl Ross gets it all right: the tang and texture of Buffalo at the turn of the last century; the deep divisions and complex bonds of race and brotherhood; the danger and exhilaration felt by those who have the sky in their blood. This is a deeply moving and memorable story of our longing for freedom and for flight; it is a celebration of the capacity of the human spirit and imagination, even in unpromising and unlikely circumstances, to soar.EUR EUR"Mick Cochrane
According to the publisher, Blackbird Rising is as educational as it is enjoyable. Tied to dramatic historical events of 1901, the storyline encompasses the plight of African Americans, the challenge of aviation, the celebration of the worldEUR s progress, and a presidentEUR s assassination. To further anchor the book in real events, photographs found in RossEUR s extensive research are peppered throughout the narrative. Discussion questions for class use have also been added.
Although this is his first novel, Mr. Ross is an accomplished writer of many genres. Some of his honors for writing include a LIFT Fiction Fellowship for his short stories, first place commentary awards from the New York Associated Press and the New York BroadcastersEUR Association for his public radio essays, a Saltonstall Foundation grant for play writing, and an Edgar Allan Poe Award from Mystery Writers of America for his play Matter of Intent.
Blackbird Rising (ISBN: 978-0-9817070-4-4) is distributed by Ingram Book Company, Baker & Taylor, NACSCORP and Full Court Press. Books can be ordered from any bookstore and are available on-line.
