International group exhibition opens at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center April 25
Women Forward Part 2, an international group exhibition will open at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center on April 25 and be on view through May 31. Included in this inaugural biennial exhibition are renowned Feminist artists Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Toshiko Takaezu, and Yoko Ono. This survey of women's art takes place in a stately landmark bank building in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York across from the famous Peter Luger steakhouse.
While Part 1 (March 7 - April 12) of the exhibition featured artists born before 1950, Part 2 exemplifies the work of women born thereafter and includes local Brooklyn artist Alexandra Limpert. The work raises feminist issues and gender awareness in a progressive artistic neighborhood. Although Limpert's processes of metal work and motion are perceived as man-made, Limpert's sculpture rises out of her own ideology as a female artist and mechanical animator. Limpert is a sculptor who works with steel, empty space and electrical components to create figures that explore the boundaries of familiar form. Her life-size figures I and Third Generation refer to states of being. Their open metal structures resemble anatomical charts. "I" is programmed to react to the viewer when triggered by sensor. Its eyes roam and its interior moves giving it a living presence. "Third Generation" is a still figure in a state of transition. Also on view is a group of small abstract steel figures.
Limpert shows her work both locally and internationally. Her work will be featured at the new C.C.C.P. gallery from April 3 - April 26 which is also located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
