Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Deborah Coleman Givens as a Distinguished Professional

Deborah Coleman Givens will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.

MERRILLVILLE, IN, January 21, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deborah Coleman Givens, ICU Nurse Manager at Merrillville, Indiana Methodist Hospitals, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Deborah Coleman Givens will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.

Getting her feet wet in 1980 in the surgical intensive care area at Rush Presbyterian in Chicago, Illinois, Deborah Coleman Givens has since dedicated her entire career to learning the many facets of the healthcare system. Now serving as an ICU Nurse Manager for Merrillville, Indiana Methodist Hospitals, she serves in a leadership capacity managing a 15-bed ICU unit. A role model and transformational leader for registered nurses, she also helps to increase their knowledge base related to ICU critical thinking skills, a component that she finds most rewarding.

"I was first exposed to the world of nursing at the age of 13, opening up my eyes and views about the healthcare system," Ms. Coleman Givens said about her mentoring years. "Growing up in the projects on the west side of Chicago, a small Catholic hospital took 10 young girls and taught us how to make beds, empty bedpans, and pass water. One nurse, in particular, took me under her wings and mentored me. I will never forget her; it changed my life forever. I knew from that point on what I wanted to do in life. I wanted to help sick people and work as a proud nurse."

Prior to becoming an ICU Nurse Manager, Ms. Coleman Givens was a critical/trauma nurse. Going back to school to advance her knowledge base, she completed both her MS in Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, followed by her Doctoral of Nursing Practice DNP (c) with an emphasis on leadership.

Currently, Ms. Coleman Givens is a member of Sigma That Tau, a nursing honor society, and the Institutional Review Board for research projects at Methodist Hospitals in Indiana. She also designed a walking program in which she assisted overweight individuals on how to walk and keep track of their progress with heart rate monitors.
