Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Ellen Icolari as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

    STATEN ISLAND, NY, December 03, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Ellen Icolari, Founder and Board Chair of Staten Island Community Charter School, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Ellen Icolari will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.

Retiring from a very rewarding career in education in 2002 after 32 years of service, Ellen Icolari made the decision to guide the process of helping a community group to prepare a winning charter school application in 2007. Now serving as the Founder and Board Chair of Staten Island Community Charter School, Ms. Icolari is responsible for making sure that the school operates according to the charter agreement.

"Everything I have learned and done in the past have all contributed to my being able to open a charter school, especially my years studying education and working in public schools and classrooms," Ms. Icolari stated. "I am still learning every day. My entire career has been a process of preparation, opportunity, and following my interests."

Dedicated to improving educational achievement and equity for poor children and children of color, Ms. Icolari believes in the mission of Staten Island Community Charter School which is to provide an exemplary K-8 education program for students on the North Shore of Staten Island, New York.

Ms. Icolari received two Fulbright-Hays Summer Seminar Abroad scholarships, one in 1992 for Tanzania and Zambia, and one in 1996 for South Africa. She holds a BS in Elementary Education, Summa Cum Laude, from Medgar Evers College (CUNY), an MA in Family and Community Education from Columbia University Teachers College, and an MA in Teaching Reading from Bank Street College.
