Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Mary Terzian as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

Mary Terzian will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016.

HACIENDA HEIGHTS, CA, February 20, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mary Terzian, Author, Freelance Writer, Blogger, and Public Speaker, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Mary Terzian will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016.

In 1994, Mary Terzian took an early retirement from her career as a Senior Auditor at The Aerospace Corporation, to focus exclusively on her writing.

"I always wanted to write," Terzian explained about how she transitioned to being an author, "but I had to earn a decent living first. My career as an internal auditor interfered with my calling. The skills for creative writing are not compatible with the rigid accountability of internal auditing."

Terzian has since authored her second multicultural, nonfiction memoir, titled 'Politically Homeless: A Five-Year Odyssey', published through AuthorHouse, in July 2015. The book reflects the universal struggles of immigrants who have lost their homeland and must restart life elsewhere. Unfolding with extraordinary ventures into unfamiliar territory, it is a journey that transforms a shy and reserved young girl into an intrepid woman.

Growing up in Cairo in an Armenian community, most of the escapees are from the Armenian genocide. Terzian was denied college education because it was considered superfluous for women at the time. "I can and I will," she promised herself as a young woman, and it became the maxim that steered her life's journey. Defying tradition, she joined the World Health Organization in Alexandria and was eventually accepted on an expatriate assignment in Leopoldville, Congo, during the height of their civil war. Two years later, while saving funds for her college tuition, she chose to treat her "home leave" vacation as a mission to travel through three continents to visit her scattered family members all the way to Soviet Armenia where her brother lived. Her second purpose was to find an alternative niche in a stable country.

Terzian diligently reported her adventures, handwriting them in Armenian, to her hometown editor in Cairo, including Khrushchev's demise. She was unaware then that 50 years later she would pull her stories together in 'Politically Homeless', her latest book. She returned to Leopoldville via Lebanon and East Coast African countries, her last flight with young mercenaries. A year later she was transferred to Lome, Togo, where she resigned her post for legitimate reasons and moved to Lebanon. Unable to establish residence, she made her way to United States via the American Embassy in Beirut.

Immediately upon arrival in New York she attended Columbia University to study Comparative Literature. Three years later she moved to Los Angeles, with her baby, to be close to family. Through evening sessions at California State University, she secured a B.Sc. in Business Administration in 1977. She received the degree but not the euphoria for success. She landed an auditing job in 1982 and remained there for the next 12 years.

In order to allay her urge for writing she volunteered to edit the Aerospace Toastmasters Club newsletter, and later the Aerospace Women's Committee newsletter. Her subsequent efforts to edit the Aerospace Retirees' newsletter earned her the title of Newsletter Editor Extraordinaire.

Terzian's articles, both in Armenian and in English, have been published in newspapers, magazines, blogs, and online. In addition to acquiring ribbons and trophies from Toastmasters, she is also the two- time winner in English Literature, Seniors, in the annual contests organized by the Armenian Allied Arts Association. She received a PEN USA Emerging Voices scholarship in 2001 for an eight-month course. Her first book, 'The Immigrants' Daughter', about growing up in Egypt, was the recipient of a Best Books 2006 Award. Writers' Digest characterized it as "Laced with the perfect mix of drama and humor, with some occasional sarcasm thrown in for good measure."

Terzian is a member of Writers' Club of Whittier. She lives in Southern California.
