Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Maryanne Courtney as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

Maryanne Courtney will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016/2017.

PARKERSBURG, WV, October 13, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Maryanne Courtney, Retired Teacher for Wirt County and Wood County Board of Education, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Maryanne Courtney will be featured in an upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016/2017.

Maryanne Courtney spent 33 years in the classroom before retiring in 2015. Having spent the first three years as a middle/high school Learning Disabilities Teacher for Wirt County Board of Education in West Virginia, she later transitioned into a Special Education Teacher role for grades Pre-K through grade nine where she focused on helping students suffering from various learning disabilities, those that were mentally impaired, and those with behavior disorders. After 17 years, she entered into a regular classroom setting teaching third grade students where she remained for another 16 years before ultimately retiring.

"As a teacher, one of the biggest challenges is getting the parents, teachers, and students to all collaborate together in an effort to meet the many needs of students," Courtney said about the misconception. "It takes effort from all parties to be successful."

Crediting much of her success in teaching to taking the advice of tenured teachers and relying on mentors to guide her, Courtney feels fortunate to have enjoyed so many wonderful years in the classroom.

Prior to attending college, Courtney actively participated in Junior Achievement from 1974-78, represented Cleveland at the NAJAC conference at Indiana University in 1978, and earned Secretary of the Year for Cleveland, Ohio also in 1978, the same year she graduated from North Olmsted High School. Completing her Bachelor of Arts in Special Education at Ohio University in 1982, Courtney quickly landed her first position in education in Wirt County from 1982-85 before beginning a 20-year teaching position with the Wood County School District from 1985-2015. She completed her Master's Degree in Learning Disability at West Virginia University in 1999.
