Women of Distinction Magazine Selects Regina Davis as a Distinguished Professional in Her Field

Regina Davis was recently featured in a 2016 edition of Women of Distinction Magazine.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, December 07, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Regina Davis, Retired Early Childhood and Elementary Teacher, Co-Author of a Children's Book Series, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Regina Davis was recently featured in a 2016 edition of Women of Distinction Magazine.

Spending 38 years in the classroom teaching early childhood and elementary school-aged children, Regina Davis retired in 2010. But soon after, she was eager to continue contributing to the betterment of children through writing. Teaming up with a friend and former colleague, Carolyn Spencer, the two of them decided to tackle an ever-growing concern both inside the and outside of the schools by writing a series of children's books together.

"We wanted to teach children everywhere through our books how to deal with the harmful effects of bullying," Davis said, noting that Spencer also illustrated the entire series. "My hope is to spread our message that bullying is very hurtful and very harmful."

The Smarty Pantaloons book series came to fruition with the first book being published in 2011. 'Senor Smarty Pantaloons and the Mystery of the Missing Teachers', the first book of three, is the story of a robotic computer who comes to the rescue when strange situations occur at Foxaloon Elementary. 'Lord Computesalot's Quintessential Quest to Banish Bullies' is an activity book with reproducible pages that uses poetry, puzzles, games, and cheers to teach children about bullying. The third book in the series, 'Lord Computesalot, Ruler of Aurora Bullyalis and His Secret Quest to End Bullying', is a fantasy that shows children how terrible bullying is and presents it in a different way when the adults bully each other. In October 2013, this book received an Honorable Mention Award in the J.M. Northern Book Festival and in November 2016 it received a 4-star Pacific Review rating and seal.

Admitting that she still very much misses the everyday interaction with her students, Davis feels blessed to have been able to partake in this adventure alongside her co-author to help educate and alleviate the senseless acts associated with bullying. Today, she and Spencer spend time promoting their books by reading to children in local libraries and public and private schools. They also put on plays, dressing up as two principals, and act out their stories. They've since been guests on Close-Up Talk Radio with Jim Masters, where they had the opportunity to talk about the complexities of bullying and their book series, and were both featured in an article in the 'The Virginian Pilot' newspaper in a December 2013 issue for their contributions. Both authors will be signing their books at the Tucson Festival of Books on Saturday, March 11, 2017 and Sunday, March 12, 2017.

Further noting that all children should understand that they are worthy, Davis and Spencer explain that parent-child communication is key.

"As parents and educators, we need to understand the developing nature of bullying," Davis said. "It's important to realize the essential and key characteristics of bullying and know how to select the interventions necessary. Of all the types of bullying, verbal, physical, social, and cyber, cyber-bullying has quickly become the most dangerous. It has not only led to the loss of self-esteem, but loss of life due to online taunting, which has resulted in suicide. I've witnessed my share of bullying, both with children and adults, and I know firsthand just how harmful it is. We must make every effort to stop it."

Active as a member of International Reading Association, Virginia Beach Education Association, National Education Association, and Red Hats, Davis is also serving on the Education Committee of the Cape Charles Historical Society. Notably, Davis holds a BS in Elementary Education from St. John's University since 1967 and an MA in English from Hofstra University since 1968.
