/24-7PressRelease/ - INDIANAPOLIS, IN, December 22, 2007 - Think of Charlie's Angels or Magnum P.I. when you imagine the life of a private investigator? Well, it may not be exactly like that, but it does include a great deal of intrigue. Geist resident Brenda McGinley offered to illuminate a little of the mystery surrounding her profession.
As an eight-year veteran PI with International Investigators Inc., the job routine may have become somewhat mundane to her, but Brenda says the subject matter is always fascinating.
Unlike other jobs where you're doing the same things every day, my job is filled with captivating stories and lots of unusual circumstances. However, it's not always about discovering people's dirty little secrets or catching them in the act of something sordid. It's actually pretty straightforward most of the time.
Most people assume that private investigators spend their days incognito, conducting surveillance or making discreet inquiries. McGinley explains that while field work is part of the P.I. business, it's something she, herself, doesn't really do.
Investigators are basically just information gatherers, and a great deal of the information can be collected through interviews, databases, court records and our vast network of contacts. In many cases, she merely verifies or substantiates information for lawyers or corporations.
In describing her job, McGinley explains it is incredibly challenging but very rewarding. It requires creativity, patience, quick and crafty thinking, and a solid understanding of the law.
We have to be very careful these days about who we are giving information to, and how we are collecting it. Privacy laws are becoming much stricter, and we also want to make sure that our clients will not misuse the information we provide which means we often have to do some initial checking to see if our clients are being honest with us before we can accept a case.
Based in Indianapolis, International Investigators handles cases worldwide but performs a considerable amount of work for local businesses and professionals in and around the Geist area. However, McGinley points out that it appears many people apparently do not understand the spectrum of services that PIs can offer to small local businesses.
Over the last several years, I've noticed a large number of Geist businesses open and close their doors within a short space of time. I suspect this is often because many new business owners don't realize the importance of proper due diligence when it comes time to hiring employees, entering into partnerships or assessing their market, said McGinley, declining to comment on whether any of her prior investigations in the area have led her to this conclusion and citing the all-important confidentiality issue inherent in her business.
According to McGinley, her most rewarding case involved the kidnapping of a 6-year-old girl who was abducted by her father during a bitter custody battle. He fled the state and seemingly disappeared. Following a three-week, nationwide search, she located the missing child and managed to organize the father's apprehension by law enforcement.
You wouldn't believe the relief when we found the little girl, she recalls. The father had her hidden in the middle of a North Carolina corn field. Our investigator rescued her late at night out in the field she was wearing only her pajamas.
While this particular investigation underscores some of the more riveting aspects of P.I. work, McGinley comments that they see a high turn-over rate in the industry because many people enter the field thinking it's always full of this kind of excitement.
It doesn't take long for newbies to become bored and disillusioned when they see how much of the job involves ordinary research or office work, she said. I think that's why International Investigators has endured since 1960. We're experienced, and we've got the patience to deal with the banal aspects of the business. Of course, I stick with it because I truly enjoy the personal challenge of completing each case to the satisfaction of our client.
