Works of H. D. Hasselbarth Explore French Countryside in Cultural Photography Exhibit

Alliance Francaise de Sarasota presents the works of H.D. Hasselbarth in a special photography exhibition, De Paris a Normandie, with an opening reception on October 18th.
TAMPA, FL, October 07, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A reception for "de Paris a Normandie," is set for October 18, 2013 at 6 pm. This exhibition explores life along the Seine River and rural France through photography. Photographs are on view at the Alliance Franšaise de Sarasota now through November 2, 2013.

Organized by the Alliance Franšaise de Sarasota, the exhibition features 15 black-and-white and color photographs by award-winning, fine-arts photographer, H.D. Hasselbarth. The photographs encompass the historic and whimsical nature of rural artisanal living. They capture the serenity and tranquility of country living by exploring in the architecture, landscapes and activities of living.

These images establish a continuum of time and tradition. From the Normandy beachscapes paying homage to the ravages of World War II to the landscapes of the Calvados region, one feels that the essence of life has changed little. The architecture and landscapes juxtapose the old and new.

"France has historically promoted patronage of the arts. So it seems natural to have an exhibition based on French culture. I am very pleased with the presentation of photographs at Alliance Franšaise and, also, the corresponding book. The book has more photographs than in the show, and the quality of the product is exceptional," states Hasselbarth.

Copies of the corresponding book will be available at the reception; and the artist will be present for book signings. The book, "A Day without Cares," is sold on

Characteristic of Hasselbarth's work is the hand-printed photographs. Each photograph is printed on archival paper with archival inks. She prefers to monitor the colors and saturation of each piece, taking hours to achieve the desired effect before signing a piece. In her work, Hasselbarth assumes a neutral gaze and creates her art from commonplace subjects: a lone figure on the beach, an empty chair, a red shirt, the village hotel. Like the life she studies, her pieces run the gamut from solemnly visceral to enchantingly charming.

Hasselbarth was born in Richmond, Virginia, but moved to Florida during her college years. After studying photography in the early 1980s, she worked in the traditional method of film. During the late nineties, Hasselbarth moved away from the world of film photography and began to experiment in the less familiar, but more potent, realm of digital technology.

Her work is displayed in galleries in New Hampshire, Florida, California and New York. She is listed in Who's Who in Visual Arts - 75 Photographers for 2013-2014. Currently, her work is distributed through
