Worldwide Who's Who Names Diana L. Payne, Ph.D., Professional of the Year in Science Education

Dr. Payne facilitates learning in the fascinating field of ocean science



    GROTON, CT, August 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Diana Payne, Education Coordinator for Connecticut Sea Grant and Assistant Professor at the University of Connecticut, has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Science Education. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.

Dr. Payne specializes in ocean and coastal science and science education. She acts as a liaison between scientists and educators, helping scientists understand the constraints of formal and informal settings, translating scientific principles to educators, conducting evaluations, and writing grant proposals. She attributes her success to hard work, perseverance, and the support of family, friends and colleagues. She became involved in her profession because she understands the importance of translating science and scientific research to society.

Dr. Payne received a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education, having earned master's and bachelor's degrees in biology at Southern Connecticut State University and a teaching certification in biology and general science for grades 7-12. In addition to serving as President of the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) in 2011-12, she was the Chair of the New England Ocean Sciences Education Collaborative (NEOSEC) in 2010-11 and the Sea Grant Education Network (SGEN) in 2008. Dr. Payne has been the Regional Co-Coordinator of the Quahog Bowl, the Connecticut-Rhode Island regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) since 2007. Additionally, she is the evaluator for COSEE-TEK (Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence-Technology and Engineering for Knowledge). She looks forward to continued involvement in coastal and ocean science and education for many years to come.
