TORONTO, ON, August 04, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When it comes to real estate companies and their property management accounting systems, most companies have a "love-hate relationship," according to Don Robinson, Lynx Systems' President. "The accounting departments are happy with the functionality of the systems; it does the basics."
Unfortunately, in the other departments, the level of satisfaction with the accounting systems varies from "lukewarm to absolute dislike" depending on the perceived ease of use and on the level of functionality provided to them.
The main reason for this is that most companies have a variety of non-integrated systems that don't talk to each other. For departments outside of accounting, the tool of choice is Excel. In addition, other third party products for facility management, CRM, construction management and other key processes are sometimes used; but they are seldom integrated with the legacy accounting systems. As a result, these firms often have thousands of databases, excel spreadsheets and silos of data throughout the organization- not talking to each other, not integrated.
A number of companies have been looking at Microsoft SharePoint as a potential solution to some of these issues; however, SharePoint is primarily a set of tools to produce solutions for specific problems. Out of the box, it is somewhat like Excel; it is a blank slate. Unfortunately, it can take a long time to develop workable solutions that link with the core accounting systems and share information seamlessly. Don comments, "I have found that many companies do not have the resources or the long-term strategy, the vision or the knowledge of the possibilities of the project to use SharePoint effectively. Some companies that have tried to launch and develop SharePoint on their own have given up on the program."
