/24-7PressRelease/ - NEW DELHI, INDIA, February 11, 2007 - Prof Ian Graham headed a delegation comprising of scientists from CNAP (Center for Novel Agricultural Products) at York University to Sichuan University, China. The tour was sponsored by the office of British Consulate-General in Chongqing. This tour is a part of the China-UK partnership in the Science Programme.

The British Consul-General for Chongqing, Tim Summers, reported to Scenta News on January 9, 2007 “Renewable energy is one of the agreed priority areas for future co-operation between the two countries, and we hope this visit to Chengdu will be the first of many by Professor Graham and his colleagues."

The scientists of CNAP took part in a practicum conducted to explore the potential of Jatropha curcas to produce biodiesel. Jatropha is a tropical plant and gives oil-rich seeds, which produces biofuel. Delegation had Prof Simon McQueen-Mason. Dr Tony Larson, Dr Yi Li and Dr Andrew King as its members.

CNAP is the research wing of Biology Department at the University of York. It was instituted through funding from British Government and beneficence from the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The motive of research by CNAP is to recognize the potential of microbial- and plant-based renewable sources via gene detection to create products required by society.
