Ecological initiatives conserve water, electricity and minimize impact on surrounding environment

/24-7PressRelease/ - TULUM, Mayan Riviera, March 18, 2006 - As Earth Day approaches, EcoTulum Resorts and Spa, the trio of rustic eco-hotels along Mexico's Mayan Riviera, encourages people to adopt environmentally sound conservation practices they have implemented to help preserve the surrounding area.

EcoTulum leads the way among properties along the white sand beaches of Tulum, one hour south of Cancun, with onsite recycling of plastic, paper and organic compost. With the exception of Zahra, which has partial electricity until 11 pm, Cabanas Copal and Azulik both feature rustic zero-electricity accommodations that inspire guests to become aware of the surrounding wilderness, adjust to the soft lighting of candlelight and reconnect with their travel companion.

Cabins and buildings are constructed using local hardwoods zapote, katalox and che chen from sustainable lumber projects. Thatched roof palapas make use of fallen palm tree fronds indigenous to the area. In-room amenities are a handmade lines of all natural soaps and shampoos that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. At Azulik, guests indulge in the ultimate connection with Mother Nature: soaking in a handcarved treetrunk bathtubs. And at night at all three properties, candles and torches - not electrical lanterns - light sand and raised wood walkways through the jungle.

Among ecological initiatives are large cisterns raised above cabanas that collect rain water and are filled with fresh well water during the dry season. Purified water is available in each cabana and guests are encouraged to bring their own bottles to refill rather than buying plastic bottles and disposing of them. All cleaning products are non-toxic biodegradable products and the un-chlorinated pool at Cabanas Copal is re-filled daily with fresh well water.

Five tips to think about to make every day Earth Day:
1.Use energy saving light bulbs, turn off lights and other energy burners when not in use
2.Implement water savers in toilets
3.Feed the garden with organic matter composting of vegetable, fruit and plant remains
4.Bring reusable canvas shopping bags to the grocery store to minimize usage of plastic bags
5.Go car-free at least one day of the week and use public transportation
