Safety in the workplace should be a major cause for concern among Connecticut workers. Workplace safety is closely monitored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA.
OSHA recently found 30 serious workplace violations in Associated Spring-Barnes Group Inc.'s metal stamping plant located in Bristol. According to OSHA, there were explosions, falls, burns, fires, electric shocks and even amputations that were not properly addressed by the company. The company has been cited for the violations and fined $139,000.
Violations and injuries to workers
Serious safety violations surfaced at the metal stamping plant because of a number of injuries that resulted in death or serious bodily harm. OSHA found that the plant was negligent in its safety practices. Dust accumulated to the point that fires could occur easily. The plant was also not equipped with proper safety equipment for employees such as hearing protection and eye safety stations.
OSHA gave the business 15 business days to respond to the citations and comply with the safety measures.
Employers are responsible for providing workers with safe working conditions. Every employer has a duty to have safety procedures in place, along with education and assistance provided to their employees.
When companies are violating their duty
Because of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are the ones deemed responsible for employee safety. When they violate this duty, they place their employees at risk of serious injury or even death.
