-- Dominion Dermatology fully understands patient's health issues and wants patients to be aware of steps they can take so skin cancer can be avoided. --

GLEN ALLEN, VA, June 22, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Skin cancer affects one in five Americans and is the most common form of cancer in the United States. That scary statistic is why Glen Allen residents are encouraged to have a regular self-examination by a trained dermatologist like Dr. Sharon Camden. Dominion Dermatology provides information for patients ranging from prevention, diagnosis, treatment and others.

Protecting skin from the sun is the best step to take in order to prevent skin cancer. There are numerous opportunities patients can take to lowers the chances of developing skin cancer. Patients should seek shade when appropriate, avoid direct sun from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, wear protective clothing, apply a SPF 30 or more to exposed skin and reapply every two hours, and avoid tanning beds.

Patients can get a good feel for when they need to see a dermatologist if a spot on the skin that lasts for 2 weeks or longer is growing, changing shape, and bleeding or itching. Dr. Camden is able to make a detailed inspection of the skin and will carefully examine the growths, moles and dry patches. If something is found that resembles skin cancer, the growth may be removed and will sent to a lab for a biopsy.

If caught early, skin cancer has a cure rate of over 95% if detected and treated early. The only way a patient can tell if a growth is skin cancer, or not, they will have to seek help from a dermatologist. Dominion Dermatology encourages residents or patients to call 804-262-6060 today.
