As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Mr. Craul has established a distinguished career spanning over 48 years in soil science, currently serving as the president of Craul Land Scientists since 2001. Under his leadership, his firm has managed an impressive array of projects, with more than 30 ongoing endeavors showcasing his ability to deliver quality work consistently. He is also adept at juggling schedules to minimize conflicts and maintain efficiency. Mr. Craul's strategic approach to project management reflects his deep commitment to his profession and exceptional skill in navigating the complexities of land science.

Mr. Craul's initial exposure to soil science was observing soil sampling being accomplished for the Bucks County Soil Survey in 1967, where in 1988 he was tasked to update that very survey as an employee of U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service (USDA-NRCS). In 1976, he worked in his dad's soil characterization lab at SUNY ESF on urban soils. Mr. Craul's professional career began with a foundational role as a senior soil scientist for the Commonwealth of Kentucky from 1985 to 1988. He then joined the USDA-NRCS in Pennsylvania, where he progressed through several key positions. Starting as a soil scientist in 1988, he advanced to soil project leader for Pike County soil survey update between 1990 and 1994, followed by appointments as a soil specialist at Penn State University from 1994 to 2006, then soil scientist project leader from 2006 to 2008 for Potter County soil survey update, and as an MLRA 147 soil survey team leader until 2012. Mr. Craul's tenure at the USDA-NRCS was marked by significant achievements, including leading the team that converted paper soil survey maps into Geographic Information System data for the national web soil survey. Supervising the data capture process for Pennsylvania, parts of Maryland, West Virginia, New York and South Carolina underscored his expertise and leadership in overseeing complex processes and contributing valuable insights into land resource management.

Inspired by his father, a renowned forest soil scientist and emeritus professor, Mr. Craul ventured into the urban soils business during high school. In preparation for his career, he earned a Bachelor of Science in agronomy and a Master of Science in soil science from Pennsylvania State University in 1984 and 2000, respectively. Mr. Craul's credentials as a certified professional soil scientist through the Soil Science Society of America further attest to his expertise and dedication to his field.

Throughout his career, Mr. Craul has been an active member of several industry-related organizations, including the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Soil Science Society of America. He also served as past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Soil Scientists and contributed to the Pennsylvania Stormwater Manual Working Group. These affiliations have provided platforms for Mr. Craul to share his knowledge, engage with peers, and stay abreast of developments in his field. Moreover, he authored two books in his area of expertise, marking significant contributions to urban landscape projects and several professional articles.

Beyond his primary professional endeavors, Mr. Craul is looking forward to dedicating more time to lecturing and reducing his project load to focus on completing a third book for publication. This shift reflects his ongoing commitment to education and knowledge sharing within his field, ensuring his legacy will continue influencing future generations of soil scientists and landscape architects.

In light of his success and dedication, Mr. Craul was honored with a Merit Award for Shoemaker Green from the Society for College and University Planning, an Engineering Design Award from the Illinois Society of Civil Engineers, and an accolade from the Catholic Diocese of Wheeling in Charleston.
