Reuben Amamilo, Dott. Arch. MCRP. Lauded for Excellence in Architecture

Dr. Reuben Amamilo retired from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries



He takes the most pride in being featured in American Builders Quarterly in the article "Dr. Reuben E. Amamilo Celebrates Decades of Building Legacy for Washington State."

    DUPONT, WA, May 16, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Reuben Amamilo has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. After gaining years of expertise in capital projects design & construction management, and facilities management experience, Dr. Amamilo retired as the Capital Projects Director, Engineering and Architectural Services, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) in December 2023. During his six-year tenure as Capital Projects Director, he served as the labor and industries project owner representative/project manager from projects initiation to closeout. He assisted the agency in managing complex and time-sensitive planning and design processes and organized and monitored major capital design and construction projects budget.

Before assuming his position as Capital Projects Director, Dr. Amamilo spearheaded the L&I Department's Facilities strategic direction as the Facilities Services Program Manager.

Preceding his work with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries and Department of Enterprise Services (DES), Dr. Amamilo was the Managing Director and owner of REA Construction Management Service Firm, LLC. In this role, he managed the design and completed the renovation of Saint John Baptist Church in Tacoma, Washington, with an estimated budget of nearly $3.3 million.

During the early stages of his career, Dr. Amamilo earned valuable expertise in school campus master planning, facilities management, and budgeting for multimillion-dollar projects through various administration and management roles. At Bellarmine Preparatory High School, Tacoma, WA, as Facilities Director, he coordinated and managed the design and construction of the new chemistry and biology laboratory classroom building and renovation of the old mathematics and science building, etc. At Tacoma Community College (TCC), Tacoma, WA, as Associate Facilities Director, Capital Projects Management, he renovated several classrooms, offices, student union expansion and theater buildings, including managing the design and construction of the new Art Gallery building for students' arts exhibitions. At Bates Technical College, Tacoma, WA, as College Operations Project Manager, he completed multiple projects, etc. Dr. Amamilo participated and worked in partnership with the City of Tacoma, as Capital Projects Coordinator on phase 1 development of the University of Washington's Tacoma campus, which lasted for five years.

In preparation for his life's career, Dr. Amamilo earned a diploma of applied arts in architectural design from the State Institute of Arts in Parma, Italy. He received a Doctor of Architecture degree (Dottore in Archittetura, V.O.), from the University Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning in Venice, Italy. Subsequently coming to the USA, he expanded his professional knowledge. He earned a Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Illinois. Furthering his career and professional knowledge in Washington State, he earned construction and project management graduate certificates through the University of Washington Extension Program, Seattle, WA. Additionally, he received LEED Green Associate Certification through the U.S. Green Business Certification, Inc. in 2019. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the construction industry, Dr. Amamilo aligns himself with the Construction Management Association of America, CMAA.

In conjunction with his work, Dr. Amamilo taught the beginning, intermediate and advanced Italian language course for seven years as part-time Adjunct Faculty at Tacoma Community College. Additionally, he volunteered and contributed to his community as a strategic planning board member with the Steilacoom School District 1, Steilacoom, WA. He also served two terms of six years as planning commissioner and chair with the City of DuPont Planning Agency Advisory Committee. While his career has been filled with highlights, he takes the most pride in being featured in American Builders Quarterly in the article "Dr. Reuben E. Amamilo Celebrates Decades of Building Legacy for Washington State."

Another standout moment was his final project before retiring. It involved coordination/ collaboration with stakeholders and managed design and construction of a $53 million dollar project, namely L&I/WSDA Safety and Health Laboratory and Training Center for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries in partnership with the Washington State Department of Agriculture, WSDA.

Looking ahead, Dr. Amamilo intends to enjoy his well-deserved retirement while spending time with family, and devoting time to nourish his hobby as a vintner.
