Supported by more than 55 years of professional excellence, Dr. Ulanowicz is well-regarded for his expertise in academia, chemical engineering and ecosystems. With a wealth of experience to his credit, he currently serves as a courtesy professor in the department of biology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, beginning his tenure in 2009. Alongside this appointment, he has been recognized as a professor emeritus in the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the Center of Environmental Science at the University of Maryland since 2008.

In 1970, Dr. Ulanowicz joined the faculty of the University of Maryland's Natural Resources Institute as research assistant professor at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory. In 1974 he was promoted to associate professor and the Institute was renamed the university's Center of Environmental Science. He rose to full professor in 1980 and has thrived in that capacity for nearly three decades, until attaining emeritus status in 2008. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant professor of chemical engineering at The Catholic University of America.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Ulanowicz has participated in more than 213 refereed journal publications; altogether, his work has been cited over 20,000 times. Specializing in the analysis of ecological networks, information theory and thermodynamics in ecology, causality in evolving systems, and dialogue between science and religion, he has published numerous monographs, including the 1986 work "Growth and Development: Ecosystems Phenomenology," the 1997 work "Ecology, the Ascendent Perspective," the 2009 work "A Third Window: Natural Life Beyond Newton and Darwin" and his forthcoming 2024 work "The First Incarnation: Hope in Reality."

To prepare for his career, Dr. Ulanowicz pursued a formal education, graduating with a diploma from the Baltimore Polytech Institute in Maryland in 1961. Shortly thereafter, he earned a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1964. Dr. Ulanowicz continued his education at the venerable university, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering in 1968. During his studies, he wrote his dissertation on reaction-diffusion coupling in complex systems, having also worked as a laboratory assistant at the Institut fuer Physikalische Chemie der Universitaet Goettingen in Germany in 1964. He also briefly served as a summer research assistant at Martin Marietta Corporation in Baltimore and Orlando between 1961 and 1963.

As a testament to his success in the field, Dr. Ulanowicz has earned several accolades and inductions into such academic societies as Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi and Phi Lambda Upsilon. In 2007, he earned the Ilya A. Prigogine Medal for excellence in ecosystems dynamics from the Wessex Institute and the University of Siena, which was awarded to him at the University of Coimbra in Portugal. In addition, he was a keynote speaker at the Crafoord Seminar of the Swedish Royal Academy of Science in Stockholm in 1987 and presented before Karl Gustav XVI at the Royal Seminar of the Baltic Sea Science Conference in Stockholm in 2001.
