He became involved in his profession to help people-environmental law and utility regulation, and has further specialized in family and criminal law at the firm of Lebowitz Legal Services in New York. Mr. Lebowitz is also the founding director of the Mockingbird Foundation, founded by fans of the jam band Phish in support of musical education for children.
Born to Harold Louis Lebowitz and Lila Ruth Lebowitz, Mr. Lebowitz attended Wesleyan University to earn a BA with honors, followed by a JD from Boston University in 1975. He was admitted to practice in New York State, followed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of New York, and the Supreme Court of the United States in 1980. He initially served with the firm of Robert J. Kafin Law Offices, followed by seven years as staff counsel for the New York State Department of Public Service.
In 1984, Mr. Lebowitz joined ITT Communications Services in Secaucus, New Jersey, but returned to his home town as principal of his own firm in 1986. The initial firm lasted one year, and after working with the firm of Miller, Mannix, Lemery and Pratt, he went on to Krolick and DeGraff, followed by Lemery and Reid. Notably, Mr. Lebowitz worked with Lemery Greisler LLC from 1998 to 2006, and with Green and Seifter until 2010.
One of Mr. Lebowitz's biggest achievements was the rezoning that allowed the Global Foundries Semiconductor Manufacturing Plant and the Saratoga County Water Project to be built and prevailing on the litigation that was involved in trying to stop those projects. In the coming years, he intends to continue helping people, and enjoys representing normal people in his community because they appreciate it so much. He feels the good karmic energy that goes back and forth, and likes the sense that he is helping people.
