A music educator, college professor and professional musician, Dr. Hardiman picked up his first instrument when he was just in elementary school. Practicing the trumpet and piano, his passion later turned into a very successful and rewarding career. First teaching fifth and sixth grade students and instrumental music in the Indianapolis, Indiana Public Schools between 1959 and 1971, he later taught instrumental music at Berkeley Unified School District in California from 1971 to 1974. Entering academia, Mr. Hardiman taught at both Contra Costa Community College and Alameda College before accepting an opportunity at the City College of San Francisco in 1974. Teaching on campus for 30 years until 2004, he would often bring guest musicians in to the classroom, workshops, and end of the semester concerts to keep his courses interesting. For over 40 years, Dr. Hardiman has played the trumpet and piano and has worked tirelessly as a composer/arranger, band leader, adjudicator and a jazz historian. David Hardiman's Combos/San Francisco All Star Big Band performances include Union Street Fairs, Palo Alto Street Fairs, San Francisco Art Festival, Duke Ellington Celebrations, Count Basie Celebrations, Willie Brown Cotton Club Revue., Martin Luther King Museum of Modern Art, Oakland Links, Inc., Cotillions; Groups have performed at Parties, Weddings, Festivals, Colleges, Universities, Fairs, Carnivals, etc. As a member of the St. Gabriel's Celestial Brass Band he traveled to Pori Finland, Andorra, Esplanade, Spain, Italy, "North Sea Jazz Festival" in The Hague, and Indiana State Fair. He has produced five recordings: "DAVID HARDIMAN'S MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD, VOL. 2", "DAVID HARDIMAN'S MUSIC AROUND THE WORLD" , DAVID HARDIMAN'S SAN FRANCISCO ALL STAR BIG BAND "37TH ANNIVERSARY", "PORTRAIT OF DAVID HARDIMAN", and SAN FRANCISCO ALL STAR BIG BAND "IT'LL BE ALRIGHT", and recorded with some of the most talented musicians from all different backgrounds, including Jamaican, Latin and African artists. He also played in bands accompanying Jackie Wilson, Gladys Knight and the Pips, The Honey Cones and Johnnie Ray, among others. Dr. Hardiman was a leader and arranger for the Tina Lane TV Show, participated in numerous special performances over the years with Jazz Perspectives at the Gould Theater, San Francisco, Indianapolis Jazz Fest., Duke Ellington Celebration Into the Millennium, 1999, Tribute to Wes Montgomery, Jazz Concert, Tribute to Clifford Brown, Tribute to the Trumpet Giants-Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Lee Morgan & Clifford Brown; AT&T Harlem Wed. Nights, An Evening with Doris Ward and Lionel Hampton, Reminiscence II, Echoes of Harlem's Apollo Theatre, Tea Dancing, Princeton by the Sea, Black Film Makers Festivals, Paramount Theater, Oakland, CA. Performing experiences: Opera Orchestra-Indiana University, Marching "100" Band-Indiana University, Civic Symphony-Indiana Central College, Stage Band-Butler University, San Francisco Golden Gate Park Band 1973-1995; Bugler at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields Race Tracks, 1995-present.

A longtime member of the National Association of Negro Musicians, the American Federation of Musicians and the Jazz Action Movement, among others. Dr. Hardiman also served as a board director for the Oakland Jazz Complex and as president of the Bay Area Jazz Society. Dr. Hardiman has been cited in the 54th edition of Who's Who in America. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Indiana University in 1959 and a Master of Arts in Music from Butler University in 1971, and received an Honorary Doctorate in World Music from Martin University in 2017. He is certified to teach music in community college in California, and in Indiana and holds a Standard Teaching Credential.
