Dr. Castillo overcame challenges to bring about constructive change through his career

TUSTIN, CA, November 12, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Rolando Castillo, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After experiencing discrimination from a high school teacher, Dr. Castillo was determined to utilize all of his resources to become successful in his career. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in social ecology and mental health from the University of California, a Master of Arts in psychology from Goddard College and a Doctor of Philosophy in education from Claremont University. Dr. Castillo began his career as an associate clinical professor in psychosocial medicine at the University of California Irvine.

In 1990, Dr. Castillo founded the Consortium of Professionals and Physicians from Latin America (COPHYLA), with which he has served voluntarily as the chief executive officer for more than 30 years. He worked as an instructor and faculty member in various teaching settings including public education, graduate school and health and mental health. Moreover, Dr. Castillo was responsible for the design, development and implementation of capacity building programs for international physicians, dentists, nurses and other healthcare professionals to serve in underserved and underrepresented safety net communities in California and throughout the United States.

Over the years, Dr. Castillo has garnered expertise in integrating primary care and mental health care, including war trauma. Among the highlights of his career, he was incredibly proud of his time as a faculty member in the department of medicine at the University of California Irvine. He was also instrumental in the development of the Welcome Back Program at Grossmont College in San Diego, California, which presented newly immigrated medical doctors with academic upward mobility and opportunities to work in entry level and advance positions while navigating the American educational and workforce system. Through this program, many doctors were able to avoid going through a second round of training in the United States after having already trained for years in other countries.

As a respected voice in his field, Dr. Castillo has penned numerous research publications on psychosocial medicine in primary care practice. He also authored a book, "Successful Immigrants in the Health Care Profession: Brain Drain or Brain Gain."
