Having earned a prominent reputation as a leader in academia for more than three decades, Dr. Barron has led the Energy Safety Research Institute at the highly regarded public research institution of higher education, Swansea University, as its director since 2014. In this role, he oversees a team of approximately 35 individual and reports directly to the vice chancellor. He also serves as the Sêr Cymru chairperson of low carbon energy and environment in the faculty of science and engineering. As a commitment to his field, Dr. Barron lends his expertise as the chief technology officer for both C-Bond Systems Inc. in Houston, a nanotechnology company specializes in C-Bond technology, and Apex Water Solutions in Doha, Qatar who are implementing technology for cleaning produced water from the energy industry.

Beginning his academic career in 1987, when he joined the prestigious Harvard University in the U.S., Dr. Barron spent eight years as an assistant, then associate, professor of chemistry, after which he was recruited by Rice University, where he enjoyed a tenured position for more than two decades. During this time, he had the opportunity to become the Charles W. Duncan, Jr. - Welch chairperson of chemistry and the associate dean of industry interactions and technology transfer. He also became a founding faculty staff member of the world's first nanotechnology research center and a co-founder of the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship. Dr. Barron just recently retired in 2018 as a professor emeritus of material science and nanoengineering. Besides his academic commitments in Texas, he also held positions as a visiting professor at the University of Wales and recently accepted a position as a visiting professor of environmental engineering at the University Technology Brunei in 2020 and an Associate Professor within the Arizona Institutes for Resilience at the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ.

As a respected scientist and entrepreneur, Dr. Barron has established seven companies throughout the course of his career. Among them, he founded Gallia Inc. in 1992, where he also served as the chairperson of its scientific advisory board. He also established Oxane Materials in 2002, as the result of his work on ceramic nanoparticles, and subsequently co-founded Natcore Technology in 2004, where he has served as a consultant and has since been active on the company's advisory board. More recently, Dr. Barron co-founded FXI, Inc in 2020 as a response to the COVID-19 epidemic. Along with his wife Merrie he founded MiDAS Green Innovations, Ltd a consulting and technology innovation company.
Dr. Barron has held over 40 patents in his field since 1990. Furthermore, he has published hundreds of books, including one that he co-authored with his wife, and has contributed over 550 peer-reviewed scholarly articles, many of which concentrate on materials preparation and the developments in nanotechnology. Likewise, Dr. Barron has served in various editorial roles on behalf of 14 leading journals.

Participating in multiple civic engagements throughout his career, Dr. Barron is currently a special advisor to the president of Vilnius University in Lithuania and the chairperson for Network for Energy Technology. Some of his previous commitments included activity on the advisory board and as a science developer for the National Science Research Center, the Smithsonian Institution, and National Academy of Science and as an advisor to the U.S. police and fire departments.

Born in England, Dr. Barron earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry at Imperial College of London, with first class honors, in 1983, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in chemistry in 1986. After completing his doctoral work, he traveled to the U.S., where he spent a year as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Texas at Austin between 1986 and 1987. A distinguished figure in his field, Dr. Barron is an elected fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the Windsor Energy Group, the U.K. Carbon Capture and Storage Centre, and Sigma Xi.

Recognized for his achievements, Dr. Barron was recently selected for the Star of Asia International Award from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2019. He also received the World Technology Award (Materials), an Applied Inorganic Chemistry Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, the prestigious Norman Hackerman Award in Chemical Research from the Welch Foundation in 2002 and, among other accolades, recognition as a Prince of Wales Visiting Innovator in 2008. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Barron has been cited in various editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
