Richard P. Brown, MD discusses integrative treatment in new book

NEW YORK, NY, July 9, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Richard P. Brown, MD, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for his qualities of dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of integrative psychiatry.
Dr. Brown's remarkable medical career spans more than 30 years. He is viewed by colleagues in North America and abroad as an expert in herbal medicine and is praised for his extraordinary knowledge of integrative psychiatry, conventional psychotherapy, and pharmacology. He provides direct care and consultations including breathwork, Qi Gong, yoga, and meditation practices for healthcare practitioners, individuals affected by the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, and the general public. The patient base he serves is in metropolitan New York.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University where he teaches integrative psychiatry and psychopharmacology. He is actively involved in medical research with a particular focus on the use of breathing and meditative practices as adjunctive treatments for anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, military stress, depression, attention deficit disorder and recovery from mass disasters. Over the course of his career, he has authored over 80 scholarly articles and book chapters regarding pharmacological treatments, complementary approaches in psychiatry, and clinical studies.

Dr. Brown is listed among the "Best Doctors in the New York Metro Area" (last 10 years). He is also recognized among the "Best Psychiatrists in the United States" - a distinction he's held since 2007. Although he has received a number of high-ranking honors from prestigious organizations, Dr. Brown considers his introduction of valproic acid, DHEA, 7-keto DHEA, SAM-e and Rhodiola rosea into medical practice in the United States to be his most outstanding accomplishments.

Dr. Brown is quoted as saying, "My goal is to integrate [the] best practices from conventional and complementary medicine to enhance quality of life, well-being and joy." With this in mind, he recently penned a book with his colleagues, Patricia L. Gerbarg, MD and Philip R. Muskin, MD entitled How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care. Published by W.W. Norton & Company in 2009, the work is for both healthcare professionals and the general public, for use as a tool to enhance clinical practices or to serve as a reference with health-related information. In addition to his newest book, Dr. Brown recently created a new workshop called Breath~Body~Mind, where patients and communities learn about the integration of breath and movement practices as part of QiGong, Coherent Breathing, yoga and Open Focus meditation.

A board certified psychiatrist, Dr. Brown earned his MD in 1977 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a residency in psychiatry and a fellowship in psychobiology and psychopharmacology at New York Hospital. Dr. Brown is professionally affiliated with the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and the American Psychiatric Association. He is an active supporter of Serving those Who Serve by providing assistance and counseling for survivors of the September 11th tragedy and Ground Zero workers.
