Cambridge Who's Who Names Barbara Martin Professional of the Year
Press Release January 4, 2010
Barbara Martin honored for excellence in elementary education

/24-7PressRelease/ -- PENSACOLA, FL, January 4, 2010, Barbara Martin, Educator for the Teacher Program for Academically Talented Students in the Escambia County School District, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Elementary Education. While inclusion in Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named the Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, and leadership abilities.

Barbara Martin has 18 years of experience as an educator, with the last 13 of these years spent teaching the academically gifted. An expert mathematics teacher, she handles classes in the third through eighth grades, utilizing a unique program specifically designed for 630 of the county's most promising students. She teaches accounting, debits and credits, and data analysis through a stock market game, helping her pupils follow stocks and determine when they should make a purchase. Ms. Martin believes that the needs of academically talented children are often overlooked because it is assumed that they have an advantage; she considers being able to work with them and see them enjoy learning to be the most rewarding aspects of her career. Recently, she was the recipient of an award from stocktrac.com because her students won first and third places in the district in an online stock market simulation game.

Prior to joining Escambia Country School District, Ms. Martin taught a gifted program at Brown Barge Middle School, where she was nominated as its 2005 Teacher of the Year. She also served as a sixth-grade science teacher at Westlawn Middle School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Rigdon Road Elementary School in Columbus, Georgia.

An alumna of Auburn University, Ms. Martin received her Master of Arts in Elementary Education in 1972. She also earned an Endorsement in Gifted Education from the University of Alabama in 1995. She is a member of the Escambia County Association of Social Studies, the Florida Association for the Gifted, the National Association for Gifted Children, the National Council for the Gifted, the National Education Association, Kappa Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Alpha Delta Kappa. Ms. Martin enjoys her work immensely, and looks forward to continuing in this capacity.
