A: How many can you afford? —excerpt from "Lowering the Bar: Lawyer Jokes and Legal Culture." Although its undertones offer an interpretation on political discourse, the humor between the pages is tangible for most Americans. It is true that attached to most professions are certain stereotypes—lawyers by nature are ambivalent and driven by monetary gain, are they not? We may be inclined to think so, but standing apart from these preconceived notions of what lawyers are or should be fall select individuals who stand out as beacons in their field—rarities even, in an industry dappled by misconceptions. It is here that Gershon Dean Cohen, Attorney at Law, has made a name for himself. A solo practitioner in San Antonio, Texas since 1980, Cohen has garnered a reputation for diligence and honesty among his clients and fellow legal professionals. To highlight his contributions and accomplishments in the field of legal services, Cambridge Who's Who caught up with Cohen in January for an exclusive interview.

Specialized in commercial litigation and legal malpractice, Cohen dedicates his efforts to representing individuals and organizations seeking justice in a variety of disputes. He works tirelessly to ensure that his clients understand their legal options and receive the highest-quality treatment. He commented, "When you take someone through litigation, it's a very human process. In every one of the situations I am handling, there are particular human aspects [involving] my clients. They all have a need for help." Cohen represents clients in both state and federal court—oftentimes pursuing compensatory damages for business losses incurred as a result of misconduct, negligence and poor management practices. He is particularly knowledgeable regarding securities litigation, insurance claims, creditors' rights cases, and mediation and arbitration.

Cohen holds a JD from St. Mary's University, earned in 1976, and certifications in mediation and arbitration in 2000 from the National Mediation Academy and National Arbitration Institute. He earned a bachelor of arts from the University of Tulsa in 1973 and in 1976, was admitted to the State Bar of Texas. Subsequently, he was admitted to the U.S. District Court's Western District of Texas. His professional affiliations include the San Antonio Bar Association.

A BV-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, Cohen regards the legal field as a challenging one. He enjoys working in a dynamic environment with a diverse range of clientele, all of whom require unique legal counsel. "I always strive to be a good communicator," he said. "I want people to understand that I'm trying to help them and [hope] that they have a certain feeling of appreciation for what I'm doing. When I'm achieving these results, I know I'm doing my job." Q: What's the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer? A: A good lawyer knows the law. A great lawyer knows the law and never loses sight of the client's best interests.
