Margarita Sordo Named a VIP Member of Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Medical Informatics

BOSTON, MA, February 20, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Margarita Sordo, Senior Medical Informatics Research Scientist for Partners HealthCare and Instructor at Harvard Medical School, has been named a VIP member of Worldwide Who's Who. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.

A native of Mexico City, Dr. Sordo has always been drawn to computers and the medical field. When she discovered medical informatics, she felt it afforded her the perfect opportunity to interact with clinicians and work with computers. Today, with nearly two decades of professional experience, she specializes in knowledge representation and artificial intelligence for clinical decision support. She relocated to the U.S. in 2002, and brings her experience and expertise to her current role at Partners HealthCare. Her position entails conducting research in biomedical informatics, analyzing the company's clinical system requirements, developing solutions for clinical decision support, and aligning systems with the company's internal structure and existing standards.

Additionally, Dr. Sordo has taught courses in clinical decision support and artificial intelligence at Harvard Medical School since 2005. Dr. Sordo was also involved in teaching in Mexico City; she taught high school and college level classes in computing, mathematics and statistics, as well as qualification courses in computer software for management personnel. From 2010 to 2011, Dr. Sordo served as an associate scientist within the informatics department of Children's Hospital Boston. She has been involved with this hospital since 2006 as a collaborator for an informatics program. From 2008 to 2010, she was an assistant in computer science for Massachusetts General Hospital. Before working in this position, she spent 2002 to 2008 at Brigham and Women's Hospital as a research associate in medical informatics. Prior to relocating to the U.S., she was involved in software development and consulting in Mexico between 1990 and 1994. She later served from 2000 to 2008 as a software adviser in the United Kingdom for the Sussex & Kent ME/CFS Society.

Dr. Sordo has been involved in the editing of a number of publications. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Computers in Healthcare and the editor of the book series Advanced Computational Intelligence Paradigms in Healthcare. Dr. Sordo has been invited to speak at the University of Sussex, where she gave a seminar titled, "KBANNs and the classification of 31P MRS of malignant mammary tissues." She has been asked to lecture at MIT and Harvard Medical School on numerous occasions. In 2005, she discussed health care standards at the annual Partners IS Research Symposium in Boston. The same year, she spoke at the Sixth International Symposium on Biological and

Medical Data Analysis in Portugal. Dr. Sordo has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters. She is the sole author of "Introduction to Neural Networks in Healthcare" and "GELLO - A Guideline Expression Language for Decision Support."

Dr. Sordo attributes her accomplishments to her hard work, passion and constant desire to help the field advance to the next level. Her success has also been supported by her excellent educational foundation. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Computer Engineering from Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico, a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence from The University of Edinburgh, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Sussex. Dr. Sordo was also a research fellow in Medical Iinformatics and Artificial Intelligence in the UK from 1999 through 2001. Looking toward the future, Dr. Sordo intends to remain in her current position and grow the support platform for clinical research.
