Amy E. Krafft, Ph.D. Recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Pharmaceuticals

    ALEXANDRIA, VA, June 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Amy Krafft, Program Officer for Influenza Therapeutics and Diagnostics Product Development for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership, and excellence in pharmaceuticals.

With more than five years of experience as a program officer for product development for the NIH, Dr. Krafft is responsible for scientific and technical oversight of a grant portfolio supporting discovery and early product development of therapeutics and diagnostics for influenza control, as well as managing in vitro and in vivo proof-of-concept studies for new antiviral candidates against influenza. The grants are awarded to researchers working in the field of influenza therapeutics and diagnostics development in small business, nonprofit research, and academic settings.

She moved into her current administrative role at the NIH after working for the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) for 13 years serving as the scientific director of the molecular diagnostics laboratory and a staff molecular biologist doing research in molecular pathology and methods development on new detection platforms for diagnosis of hematopathology, solid tumors, genetic diseases, and infectious disease agents. She also helped setup and gain accreditation for the routine molecular diagnostics laboratory to support the worldwide pathology consultation service at the AFIP in 1995. She attributes her success in life to her parents, who were both scientists, and by example, led her to an interesting career path in the health sciences.

Dr. Krafft received a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the Medical College of Virginia in 1989 followed by post-doctoral training in microbial pathogenesis with Dr. Randall K. Holmes at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. She completed a Bachelor of Science in biology and economics from Mary Washington College in 1977 and gained Medical Technology certification through the Catholic University of America in 1980. Her early work experiences in the health sciences field include serving as a Medical Technologist in microbiology laboratories at the National Children's Hospital Medical Center, the Walter Reed Medical Center, and the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. She is a member of the Association for Molecular Pathology.
