Holiday Storage Headaches (And What You Can Do to Avoid Them) from Stacks and Stacks Homewares

There are four main villains when it comes to the holiday storage wars: Tangles, breakage, water damage and loss. Get your holiday storage under control now to avoid the headache next year.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, December 28, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- From broken bulbs to tangled lights, we have all had that moment when we open a holiday storage box only to find a jumbled mess (or worse). It's a dreaded moment for most as you know you will spend extra time, not to mention money, teasing out what is left of last year's Christmas decorations. The good news is that storage manufacturers have caught on to this problem and have responded with some great holiday storage concepts to get you from year to year with less hassle.

There are four main villains when it comes to the holiday storage wars: Tangles, breakage, water damage and loss. By taking careful steps this year to get your holiday storage under control, you can easily avoid some of those common problems next year, and for many more years to come.

Here are some expert tips in storing Holiday Decorations the right way:

- Tangles - With more and more people investing in LED lights that are environmentally friendly, but also pricier, it is becoming increasingly important to have a good Christmas light storage plan. You really want to make sure you get the most life out of them. Storage reels take the guesswork out of Christmas light storage. Simply roll them up at the end of the season and roll them out when the next one comes around. Bonus TIP: With packing tape, attached those packets of extra bulbs and fuses to the reel before you reel in the lights.

- Breakage - Ornament storage boxes designed specifically with breakables in mind have become more plentiful on the market, and also a lot less expensive. For about the same cost as a box of glass bulbs, you can get an ornament storage box with divided cells so that there is no chance for ornaments bumping into one another. Drawers offer ease of use, while stacking models typically allow for a larger capacity (up to 64 bulbs in some). Bonus TIP: Use an old egg crate to store those teeny tiny glass bulbs.

- Water Damage - There are two ways to go when reducing water damage is number one on your list: The first is to invest in a few extra plastic storage boxes just for holiday decorations. The second, if you are using cardboard boxes, is to simply keep the boxes stored up on a shelf, off the floor and away from doors and windows that tend to get water-blasted by weather. Bonus TIP: Keep stockings, tree skirts and any other fabric-based decor in re-sealable plastic bags or linen storage bags with zippers.

- Loss - If you find that you tend to lose important pieces of your holiday decor scheme, only to find them when you do your spring garage cleaning, use color-coded storage systems to easily identify Christmas boxes in the garage. This is not as difficult as it sounds, many holiday storage boxes now come in red or green, making it a cinch to spot in a pile. Bonus TIP: Cardboard users: you can purchase colored duct tape at craft stores, an easy way to color-code your Christmas decorations, or even your whole garage if you want!
