Does it Really Matter if I Use Proper Grammar or Not? Prompt Proofing Answers

To be blunt about it: yes.

VANCOUVER, BC, March 29, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- To be blunt about it: yes.

This article from Yahoo Finance reports that a Grammarly research study revealed that the quality of people's grammar has a strong correlation with their income level. In short, if you have good grammar, you are likely to earn more.

They found that not only do professionals with fewer grammar errors in their LinkedIn profiles hold higher positions, but there was also a correlation between grammar errors and promotions - those professionals with fewer errors were receiving more promotions.

As the article states, there are a number of reasons why this may be true beyond every hiring manager being a member of the Grammar Police Squad. It's more likely that using good grammar shows care and attention to detail, representing the employee's pride in their work. This is fairly critical, anyone can make poor grammar errors when they are rushing, but it is those employees that take the time to sit and review their work - or have someone review it for them - prior to submitting it who clearly go the extra mile in the workplace - a trait that all employers want their workforce to possess.

Of course, if you are a native English speaker, good grammar is often a sign of intellectual prowess. Additionally, those with good grammar are also people who have good command over the English language, so they tend to be eloquent and well spoken, which are both attractive qualities in someone who is looking to progress in the corporate workplace.

Next time you're tempted to send off that report the minute it's finished, take a second and consider sending it to a friend, reading it over or emailing it to us to look over - you'd be surprised how it will pay off!
