ROCKVILLE, MD, October 19, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sealant is one of the most under-used preventive treatments for tooth decay. At Kids Teeth, LLC., Drs. Alalouf and Madani, Potomac area pediatric dentists, highly recommend sealants for children whose permanent teeth recently came in. Sealants protect against bacteria and food particles, which normally get stuck on and between teeth. Bacteria can cause cavities. Without proper dental care, decay can spread and cause serious dental problems. Drs. Alalouf and Madani want to help children avoid this.

"As pediatric dentists, we know how susceptible children's' teeth are to cavities. The grooves and pits of teeth collect a lot of food particles and bacteria over the course of a day. Sealants act as barriers for those grooves and pits, and they normally last about five years," said Dr. Alalouf, kids dentist near Potomac, MD.

Brushing and flossing are the best preventive treatments for decay, but no one is safe against cavities. Bacteria and food debris can slip through the cracks, but sealant makes it easier to fill up those unprotected areas. Molars and premolars usually need sealants because they do most of the chewing to break down food.

Before Dr. Alalouf or Dr. Madani can apply sealant, a tooth's surface needs to be cleaned. After cleaning the tooth, they remove any traces of cleaning agents, such as toothpaste and mouthwash. Afterwards, Dr. Alalouf or Dr. Madani places an acidic solution on the fissured (grooves and pits) area of molars and premolars, among other teeth that might need sealed. The acidic solution creates a rougher surface, so it's easier for the sealant to bond to the fissured area. To complete the treatment, they use a curing light to harden the sealant.

Drs. Alalouf and Madani, Potomac pediatric dentists, want parents to remember that permanent teeth erupt at different times. It's important for kids to get regular checkups every six months. Preventative treatment helps oral health and reduces the chance of cavities and other dental issues to occur. In the long run, patients appreciate what sealants can do for their teeth. All it takes is one visit to the dentist office.

"There is nothing wrong with being extra careful with your child's teeth. When it comes to oral health, we encourage parents and kids to go the extra mile. Sealants are an important step to future oral health," said Dr. Madani, Potomac, MD kids dentist.
