HUNTINGTON, NY, January 15, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- While ingrown toenails are a milder foot problem, it is still a problem. You have take care of your feet, so your feet can take care of you. At the first signs of an ingrown toenail, let your Huntington podiatrists take care of it.

"Early treatment is the best treatment. Once an ingrown toenail problem is fixed, you usually don't need to worry about it recurring. Extra at-home precautions can make also make sure of that. If you leave it untreated, symptoms may get worse and cause more discomfort," says Dr. Abraham Yale, podiatrist in Huntington, NY.

Ingrown Toenail Treatment
An ingrown toenail occurs when the sides of your toenail curl down and into your skin. You can set off an ingrown toenail by simply cutting your toenails too short, wearing shoes that are too big or too tight or injuring the toenail. For early signs of an ingrown toenail, you need to take the proper measures at home. Soak your foot in warm water at least three times a day, and keep it dry during the remainder of the time. Also, buy shoes that are comfortable and provide enough room for your toes.

These steps can help with discomfort, possibly even the problem. If the ingrown toenail persists, your toenail may swell, feel tender and produce discharge (pus). These are signs you shouldn't ignore because the toenail is most likely infected. At this point, a surgical treatment may be in order. One of the Huntington podiatrists at Associated Podiatrists may need to remove a portion of the infected toenail.

Some people have curved toenails, which increases the chances of an ingrown toenail developing. An ingrown toenail isn't always a one-time problem-many people deal with a chronic ingrown toenail.

"If at-home treatment and partial removal of the ingrown toenail doesn't stop the problem, we have another solution for you. We simply remove the nail matrix and apply a chemical onto the affected area. This prevents part of your toenail from growing back and becoming ingrown. After the toenail heals and grows back, the nail will appear narrower," explains Pedram A. Hendizadeh, Huntington podiatrist.

If the toenail is narrower, an ingrown toenail shouldn't reoccur. To schedule an appointment at Associate Podiatrists' Huntington office, call (631) 427-3678 or submit an appointment request form via the foot doctors' website at www.greatfootcare.com. New patients are always welcome!
