DEARBORN, MI, March 12, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to the National Sleep Association, 20 million Americans have sleep apnea, but only 500,000 of those people actually seek treatment. At Luria & Birnholtz Family Dentistry, Dr. Bruce Luria, Dr. Mark Luria and Dr. Sandy Birnholtz work together to raise awareness about sleep apnea and the importance of seeking treatment from their office.

During the week of March 2-9 it is National Sleep Awareness Week, which means that Dr. Bruce Luria, Dr. Mark Luria and Dr. Sandy Birnholtz are working to raise further awareness of sleep apnea to their patients. The minimum amount of sleep needed for a person to function properly is seven hours per night. However, almost three-quarters of Americans do not reach that minimum amount of sleep, and it isn't due to a busy schedule.

"Normally when we sleep, the throat muscles keep our airway open so we can breathe in an appropriate amount of oxygen. However, when people suffer from sleep apnea, the airway narrows dangerously for an array of reasons. As a result, a vibration is caused by the unsuccessful effort to pull in air, which causes snoring," said Dr. Mark Luria, a dentist in Dearborn, MI.

Other than making a person and their partner miserable and exhausted at nighttime, sleep apnea is a major cause of high blood pressure. It can also lead to inflammation and clogging in a person's arteries. In the long run, sleep apnea also results in irritability and depression, with the worst result being death.

A patient might suffer from sleep apnea in Dearborn if they have the following signs and symptoms:
- Daytime sleepiness
- Excessive snoring at night
- Interruptions in breathing during sleep
- Shortness of breath after abrupt awakenings
- Acid reflux
- Headaches
- Memory loss

No one needs to suffer when they sleep, which is why it is important for patients to visit Luria & Birnholtz Family Dentistry for proper treatment of sleep apnea in Dearborn, MI. Proper treatment of sleep apnea will help patients in Dearborn not only change their life, but save their life as well.
