Attention Springfield Residents: Immigration Physicals Offered at VMAC

    SPRINGFIELD, VA, June 06, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Immigrants in American applying for lawful permanent resident status are required to complete an "immigration physical" as well as fill out information regarding vaccinations. At Virginia Medical Acute Care (VMAC), certified physician Dr. Mark Davis is a designated provider for immigration physicals and exams for the Department of Homeland Security.

The immigration physical's purpose is to ensure a person's physical health is not a threat to United States public health. Not just any doctor can perform this exam: The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must certify him or her as a "civil surgeon." The USCIS has authorized Dr. Davis to perform these physicals and exams.

In addition to a general physical exam to determine a person's overall health state, the immigration physical involves potentially performing lab work, X-rays and vaccinations to ensure safe public health status. Examples could include the tuberculin skin test to test for tuberculosis and sexually transmitted infection testing for diseases such as syphilis and gonorrhea. If you do not have a vaccination record, blood must also be drawn to determine if you are resistant to certain viruses, such as rotavirus, meningitis, measles, mumps, rubella and other conditions. If you have not received these vaccinations, they can be provided at VMAC. However, the only current main vaccinations you are required to have are varicella (or proof you have had chickenpox in the past), tetanus and measles, mumps and rubella (also known as the MMR shot).

To perform the physical, Dr. Davis will complete Form I-693, which is the "Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record." You will fill out the first portion of the record entitled "Part 1," which includes information on your name, current address, date of birth, place of birth and country of birth. Dr. Davis will then complete the remaining portions of the form and enclose any other supporting documents in a sealed envelope for you to submit to the USCIS.

Dr. Davis performs immigration physicals at his Springfield office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Appointments are required beforehand, and it is suggested you bring all required documents filled out as much as asked when coming to your appointment.
