RIVERVIEW, MI, July 11, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sometimes, scheduling an appointment with a new family dentist can be daunting or even nerve-wracking if a patient is not sure what to expect from the visit. For this very reason, Dr. Mehul Patel, a Woodhaven dentist, wants to share some important information about visiting his office.

The Initial Visit

Once a patient has made their first appointment with a dentist at Southshore Dental-that's great! The first visit, and every visit thereafter, promises to be a pleasant experience. For a patient's first visit, he or she will need to bring a couple of things to the appointment:

- Dental insurance card (if the patient has one)
- List of questions or concerns the patient may have about their oral health

Visit the Dentist Regularly

Studies have shown that people who visit the dentist at least twice a year are less likely to develop gum disease or tooth decay than those who rarely seek professional dental care. Routine visits to the dentist are the best way to stave off other oral maladies-like cavities-because, like so many other conditions, early detection is key in being able to effectively treat them. Dental health professionals are trained to recognize early signs of their development, and they can apply immediate treatment as well as provide you with information to prevent the condition from worsening.

The Check Up

During the check up, Dr. Mehul Patel will thoroughly inspect a patient's teeth for any signs of cavities or plaque buildup. If the plaque is not removed, it will harden and become tartar, which can cause periodontal (gum) disease. Dr. Patel will also check a patient's gums to ensure they are healthy. Most dentists will also check the tongue, jaw, throat, face, and neck for signs of swelling or other possible injury.

The Cleaning

Because tartar cannot be removed with brushing or flossing, Dr. Patel will need to remove any tartar buildup a patient might have obtained since their last visit. After he has done so, the next step in the cleaning process is to polish the teeth. Using special tools and a gritty paste will remove any surface stains on the teeth. Lastly, the hygienist or dentist will floss in between the patient's teeth, leaving the inside of their mouth feeling fresh and clean.

In between visits, be sure to brush twice and floss once daily. This will help improve your overall oral health. For more information about family dentistry in the Woodhaven, MI area, call (734) 219-6754.
