WORCESTER, MA, August 08, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- From a hard-fought hockey match to an unexpected car accident to when using the teeth to open an item goes wrong, Anthony DiStefano III, DDS, is there to help Worcester, MA patients needing emergency dentistry services.

While the protective outer enamel of the teeth may be the hardest substance in the body, the teeth are still vulnerable to damage and injury that can lead to severe pain and discomfort. Because Dr. DiStefano knows dental emergencies must be treated as quickly as possible, he makes fast accommodations in scheduling for patients who experience the unexpected.

Examples of dental emergencies in Worcester include a knocked-out, chipped or cracked tooth. Broken crowns and extreme dental pain also constitute dental issues that should be addressed immediately.

"Seeking fast treatment is vital to achieving the best outcome after injury or severe dental decay," Dr. DiStefano explains. "The sooner a patient is able to arrive at our Worcester office, the most likely a tooth can be re-attached or repaired while minimizing infection risk."

Dr. DiStefano cautions his patients if a knocked-out tooth occurs, they should resist the urge to excessively handle the tooth or even transport it simply wrapped up in a piece of paper towel or cloth. Instead, the goal should be to keep the tooth moist and in a pH environment similar to the mouth.

"If possible, a patient should hold the tooth in its former place in the mouth," Dr. DiStefano says. "A cup of milk or water with a pinch of salt will also help."

Any time a vulnerable area of the tooth is exposed or if previous dental work starts to crack, this increases the risk that opportunistic bacteria can infiltrate to the more sensitive, inner tooth portions. Patients experiencing extreme tooth pain, especially when biting down, should also seek immediate medical attention. These symptoms can indicate a dental abscess, where a tooth becomes severely infected.

As a dentist for more than three decades, Dr. DiStefano has treated his fair share of dental emergencies. His goals are to help minimize a patient's pain while also restoring a tooth to health and function whenever possible.

"No one plans on a dental emergency, but they can count on the fact that my dental office will be there to help patients through their dental emergencies," says Dr. DiStefano.
