Since becoming an ordained priest in 1974, the Rev. Schiess has taken great pride in her ongoing role with the Episcopal Church. As a priest associate with the Grace Episcopalian Church in Syracuse, N.Y., she became particularly interested in religion and feminism, which led her to become a lauded writer, lecturer and consultant in the field. In 1985, just one decade after joining the ministry, the Rev. Schiess was appointed by the governor to the New York Task Force on Life and Law. She has served as a consultant on women's issues for the Episcopal Church since 1987 and has authored numerous religious publications, including "Take Back the Church, Indeed the Witness," which was published in 1982.
A strong advocate for women's rights, the Rev. Schiess proudly served on the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights, and was a trustee of the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Foundation in 1979. From 1984 to 1987, she was the president of the International Association for Women Ministers. The Rev. Schiess maintains membership with the National Organization for Women and is an honorary lifetime member of Na'amat USA, an organization that works to provide vital education and social services for women, children and families in Israel.
Since 1986, Ms. Schiess has appeared in dozens of honors publications, including Who's Who of American Women, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the 20th Century America, Who's Who in Religion, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who in the World. Although she is appreciative of every honor she receives, the Rev. Schiess considers one of her greatest achievements to be her induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1994. Previously, she was the recipient of the Human Rights Award from the Human Rights Commission of Syracuse and Onondaga County in New York.
The Rev. Schiess is extremely grateful for the ongoing support of her husband, William A. Schiess, MD, as she works tirelessly to help her local and global communities. Since becoming an ordained minister, she has served as a rector and chaplain at Episcopalian churches across New York State. Her additional credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cincinnati, a Master of Arts from Syracuse University, and a Master of Divinity from the Rochester Center for Theological Studies.
