Omega Silva, MD, Receives Foremother Award from the National Center for Health Research

Dr. Silva continues to serve the medical community as a physician, educator and author



She is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine of George Washington University.

    WASHINGTON, DC, September 22, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Omega Silva, MD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Inspired to pursue a career in medicine, Dr. Silva received an MD from Howard University in 1967. Although she began working with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center as a research associate, her wide range of skills and medical acumen eventually led her to become the assistant chief of endocrinology and the director of diabetes clinical. In 1975, Dr. Silva entered the education sector as an associate professor of medicine with George Washington University. She continued to share her knowledge as a professor for more than 20 years before retiring from the role in 1998. She is a Professor Emeritus of Medicine of George Washington University.

Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Silva has contributed articles to a wide variety of professional journals. In addition, she was a co-author of, "Endocrinology," a medical text published in 1990. Her professional affiliations include the American College of Physicians, and The American Medical Women's Association (for which she served as president). Since 1995, Dr. Silva has been a member of the executive committee of the Healthcare Council of the National Capital Area. She is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine, and American Board of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Silva served as a mentor for the Endocrine Society's Women in Endocrinology's Open Mentoring Program and as chair of the Honorary Committee to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the founding of the College of Medicine, Howard University.

Dr. Silva has been continually recognized for her commitment to the ongoing advancement of medicine. Since 1991, she has been featured in dozens of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. At the turn of the century, Dr. Silva was featured in the National Library of Medicine's Changing the Face of Medicine, an exhibition on America's women physicians. She received a letter of commendation from the president of the United States in April 1984 and certificate of appreciation from the Veterans Administration in March 1988.

Most recently, she was honored as the recipient of the Foremother Award from the National Center for Health Research. This lifetime achievement award recognizes women who have expanded horizons and improved communities in pursuit of improved health policy.
