On-the-job avocations for Dr. Richmond included as a general aviation pilot since 1947 and maintenance of aircraft

CORONA DEL MAR, CA, November 04, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Ronald Richmond has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Richmond began his 60-year career in aerospace engineering in 1952 as an aerodynamicist for the Lockheed Corporation. Over the next six decades, he brought with him both finesse and a calculated approach to every responsibility held, whether it was acting in the role of educator or holding leadership positions within the industry. From 1952 to 1957, Dr. Richmond worked as a teaching and research assistant at the California Institute of Technology, and from 1957 to 1959, he was the assistant group leader of aeronautical performance for the Douglas Aircraft Company. He stepped away from his instructor role in 1959 to serve as the chief engineer of advanced development for Ford Aerospace, but returned to academics in 1987 to be an adjunct associate professor at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Richmond was also the director of engineering for Brunswick Defense from 1988 to 1994. He lent his expertise to a number of consulting projects over the course of his career, acting as an aerodynamics consultant for the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1956 to 1957 and for Shelby Motors LLC from 1960 to 1962. He also served as the subgroup leader for the NATO Industrial Advisory Group #16 in Belgium from 1984 to 1986. When there was time to spare, Dr. Richmond, a California native, did his part to keep Orange County safe -- he was a reserve lieutenant with the Orange County Sheriff's Department from 1976 to 2012.

With the study of aerospace and the practice of engineering involving immense brain power and a proficiency in math and science, Dr. Richmond's industry-related accomplishments are nothing short of notable. He was able to experimentally prove that skin friction force on long, slender cylinders was several times that amount on flat plates at Mach 5.8 for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. His Ph.D. thesis is available online through the CalTech Library Dr. Richmond was awarded a research assistantship by the California Institute of Technology from 1953 to 1957, and was a teaching assistant and grantee from 1955 to 1957. He prepared for his career by earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1952 and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1953 and 1957, respectively. In keeping up with advancements in the field, Dr. Richmond has been the Orange County section chairman and an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, a commander of the Western States Association of Sheriff's Air Squadrons, and the president and board chairman of the Skylarks of Southern California.
