Dr. A. Truman Schwartz Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Higher Education

An expert in the areas of science and chemistry, Dr. Schwartz has been teaching at the higher education level for the last five decades



    SAINT PAUL, MN, November 18, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A. Truman Schwartz, Ph.D., has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Passionate about education and expert in the areas of science and chemistry, Dr. Schwartz has been teaching at the higher education level for the last five decades. He joined the faculty of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. in 1966 after working in the field of research chemistry for Procter & Gamble. Over the course of the next several decades, Dr. Schwartz advanced from assistant professor to DeWitt Wallace professor. He was selected dean of faculty and spent two terms as the chair of the chemistry department from 1980 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1995. Following his retirement in 2004, Dr. Schwartz offered his expertise as a member of the Dean's Council of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Dakota.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Schwartz assumed additional opportunities in science and education that contributed to his expertise in these fields. He was a visiting researcher at the University of Lund in Sweden and the University of Massachusetts, and visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin, the University of South Dakota and the University of York. He was also the deputy director of teacher preparation and enhancement for the National Science Foundation and authored or co-authored works, including "Chemistry: Imagination and Implication," "Chemistry in Context: Applying Chemistry to Society," "And Gladly Teach: A Resource Book for Chemists Considering Academic Careers," and "Motion Toward Perfection: The Achievement of Joseph Priestly." In recognition of professional excellence, Dr. Schwartz was the recipient of the George C. Pimentel Award in Chemical Education and a Catalyst Award in Chemical Education by the Chemical Manufacturers Association and was named College Science Teacher of the Year by the Minnesota Science Teachers Association. Dr. Schwartz was selected for inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.

To prepare for his career, Dr. Schwartz earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of South Dakota. Thereafter, he attended Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar and achieved a second bachelor's degree and a Master of Arts. In 1963, he earned a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology followed by an honorary doctorate of science from the University of South Dakota in 1990. Dr. Schwartz is a fellow of both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society. For the American Chemical Society, he served as chair of the division of chemical education in 1989, the chair of the Minnesota section in 1993, and member of various other committees within the organization.
