John Katlic Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Accomplishments in Mining & Engineering

Mr. Katlic celebrates more than four decades of professional excellence

    LANCASTER, OH, November 25, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Katlic has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Over the course of his career, Mr. Katlic amassed a highly impressive resume. After serving in World War II and the Korean War, he returned to the United States and completed his education at West Virginia University, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, both in the engineering of mines, in 1955 and 1961, respectively. Mr. Katlic proceeded to join the Consolidation Coal Company in Morgantown, W.Va., as a mine superintendent, and after three years, was promoted to general superintendent. Approximately four years later, he began a lasting relationship with Eastern Associated Coal in Pittsburgh, and served the corporation as a senior mining engineer, division manager, and vice president of personnel safety and industrial relations. Mr. Katlic returned to the Consolidation Coal Company as a vice president from 1973 to 1975, but left once more to accept the position of executive vice president of administration engineering and government relations at Island Creek Coal Company. He also garnered expertise as a mine surveyor at Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company, the senior vice president of fuel supply at the American Electric Power Service Corp, and as the president of Southern Ohio Coal, Central Ohio Coal, Windsor Coal, and Conesville Coal, all subsidiaries, before he retired in 1993.

One of the highlights of Mr. Katlic's career was developing patents for a mining machine indicator and dust control in longwall mining. He is also proud to have been a member of the negotiating team of the National Bituminous Coal Wage Agreement through the Joint Industry Development Committee in 1978, and completing consulting projects in Russia, Siberia, Kazakhstan, and South Africa. Additionally, Mr. Katlic authored "Miner Jack and His Unforgettable People in the Coal Fields," in 2006 and copyrighted the short story, "Heaven is a Room Full of Dogs," and gained membership to a variety of professional organizations. Some of these include the American Institute of Mining, the Society of Mining Engineers, the National Mine Rescue Association, and the National Mining Association.

Mr. Katlic's hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. He was named Man of the Year by Coal Age Magazine in 1987, won the Erskine Ramsay Medal from the American Institute of Mining and the Kingery Safety Award from the Pennsylvania Coal Mining Institute of America, both in 1995, and was inducted into the West Virginia Coal Hall of Fame in 2000. Further, Mr. Katlic was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who in Finance and Business.
