Dr. Joseph Cooper Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Political Science

He has published over 50 articles in refereed journals and book chapters over the course of his career.

An award winning political scientist and educator, Dr. Cooper celebrates a career that involves service at several universities. At Johns Hopkins University he served as Provost and Vice-President of Academic Affairs from 1991 to 1996 and as Professor of Political Science from 1991-2012. He was appointed an Emeritus Professor of Political Science and Academy Professor of Political Science in the Academy at Johns Hopkins in 2012 and continues to retain both appointments. He is also revered for his work as a faculty member with Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he held noteworthy roles, such as the first Chair of the Political Science Department from 1967 to 1972 and the first Dean of Social Sciences from 1979 to 1988. Dr. Cooper also held distinguished chairs as a Lena Gohlman Fox Professor and Herbert S. Autrey professor of social sciences. Due to his professional excellence, he has served as a Visiting Professor in the Harvard Government Department in 1984-85 and in The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University in 1988-89. Dr. Cooper also served as staff director of the Commission on Administrative Review (known as the Obey Commission) which was charged with revising ethics rules, floor scheduling, and administrative operations in the House of Representatives. Additionally, he was a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Congressional Records, chaired by the Director of National Archives, from 1995 to 2010, a Board Member of the Dirksen Congressional Center from 1994-2000 and 2002 to 2008, and a member of the academy advisory council for the Congress Center at Indiana University. Dr. Cooper received both a one year research fellowship and a summer research fellowship from the National Endowment of the Humanities.

Dr. Cooper shares his insights and industry expertise through his written works. He has published over 50 articles in refereed journals and book chapters over the course of his career. He has also published books including "The Origins of the Standing Committees and the Development of the Modern House" and "Congress and its Committees." He has served as co-editor of the Sage Yearbook on Electoral Studies, as well as editorial board member of Legislative Studies Quarterly and the Encyclopedia of American Legislative Systems. To remain at the top of his field, Dr. Cooper is a member of the National Capital Area Political Science Association, the Midwest Political Science Association, the Southern Political Science Association, the Southwestern Political Science Association, and the American Political Science Association.

In 1955, Dr. Cooper graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts. Thereafter, he continued his studies at Harvard ultimately achieving a Master of Arts in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1961. Attributing his success to hard work, Dr. Cooper was recognized by Marquis Who's Who through inclusion in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.
