NEW YORK, NY, January 06, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dorothy O. Helly has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. After graduating magna cum laude from Smith College in 1952, Dorothy Oxman Helly continued in academia by earning a Master of Arts from Radcliffe College in 1953 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1961. She went on to use her strong educational foundation in her accomplished career as an educator and historian. Since 1999, Dr. Helly has been a professor emerita of Hunter College of the City University of New York, where she taught history and women's studies for a majority of her career. She initially joined the university as an instructor in 1963, and steadily advanced into the positions of assistant professor of history and associate professor of history before becoming a full professor in 1987. Dr. Helly also served as associate dean for the school's evening session and graduate students from 1977 to 1983.
Additionally, Dr. Helly coordinated the women's studies program at Hunter College (1984-87) and became a faculty member at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in the Ph.D. program in History and certificate program in Women's Studies. She participated in and coordinated numerous committees and workshops, as well as co-facilitated a university-wide faculty development seminar on transforming the curriculum in terms of gender, race, ethnicity and class. Other roles that Dr. Helly held over the course of her career include senior associate member of Oxford University's St. Antony's College, visiting research fellow for the International Gender Studies Center at Oxford University, and evaluator, presenter and consultant in the field. Dr. Helly also remains actively involved with the Women Writing Women's Lives Seminar associated with CUNY.
Dr. Helly has used her education and experience to contribute to a number of publications as well. She is the author of Livingstone's Legacy: Horace Waller and Victorian Mythmaking, published in 1987, and a co-author of Women's Realities, Women's Choices: An Introduction to Women's Studies first published in 1983 with its fourth edition published in 2014. She has also edited and contributed to several other books and professional journals, including the book Gendered Domains: Rethinking Public and Private in Women's History, published in 1992.
A fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Dr. Helly has maintained many professional affiliations over the course of her career. These include memberships and/or committee positions with the National Women's Studies Association, the North American Victorian Studies Association, the American Council on Learned Societies, and the National Council for Research on Women, among others. She is a past secretary and member of the board of directors of the Institute of Historical Research, and a past member of the board of directors of the Feminist Press at CUNY.
Dr. Helly's efforts have been recognized repeatedly over the years through various formal honors, such as a "Progress in Equity" Award from the American Association of University Women in 1997, a "Femmy" Award from the Feminist Press in 2007, and an on-going "Dorothy O. Helly Works in Progress" series of talks on biography for the Women Writing Women's Lives seminar at the CUNY Graduate Center. All of her awards, honors and achievements were featured in the 63rd through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 7th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 27th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World. She has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women.
