As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Recognized for five decades of invaluable contributions to her field, Dr. Akanbi now parlays her extensive knowledge into her roles as owner of and consultant for ARS Educational Services, LLC. After earning a Bachelor of Science in education from West Virginia State University, she began in the field as a Title 1 Reading teacher with Newport News Public Schools, where she stayed for two years. At that time, she switched districts, moving to Hampton City Schools, but maintaining the same position for another two years. In 1971, after moving to Buffalo, N.Y., she began as the reading coordinator at the Learning Center for the State University of New York at Buffalo while pursuing a Master of Education Degree and a Doctor of Education Degree at that same institution. She held that position for five years before becoming an instructor at Southern Illinois University, where she served from 1977 until 1978. The next year, she became an assistant professor for Norfolk State University. Ever the world-traveler, Dr. Akanbi became a lecturer for Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, from 1979 until 1981, at which point she returned to the United States, beginning work as a coordinator for the graduate reading program and an associate professor at Albany State University, where she remained for a decade.

In the early 1990s, Dr. Akanbi began a seven-year stint as department chair and professor of elementary and early childhood education at Kennesaw State University. After traveling between positions, states and countries for most of her career, she made the decision to anchor herself to Kennesaw State, but continue to grow in her roles with the school. She has researched home influences on literacy acquisition across different ages, languages and cultures, as well as the relationship between the readers' organizational schema and prose comprehension, and the development of a preschool literacy curriculum for parents and child care providers. However, this does not even begin to scratch the surface of her achievements. In 1992, she won the Outstanding College Reading Teacher of the Year Award from the Albany Area Chapter of the International Reading Association and the Partnership Award for Dedication to the Children's Academy through Kennesaw State University in 2005. In 2012 she was the recipient of the Cobb County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Elder Award for Outstanding Service and Dedication to Learning.
