Marian Tonjes, Ed.D., Honored for Excellence in Educational Curriculum & Instruction

Dr. Marian Tonjes taught at Western Washington University for two decades



    ALBUQUERUE, NM, January 10, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marian Tonjes has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Tonjes is a professor emerita of Western Washington University, where she taught educational curriculum and instruction for two decades. Prior to her retirement in 1994, she established an impressive career as an accomplished educator and active member of the academic community. Dr. Tonjes prepared for her profession at the University of New Mexico, from which she received a Bachelor of Arts, Teaching Certification and Master of Arts. She later obtained an E.D. from the University of Miami.

Dr. Tonjes began her teaching career in Albuquerque in 1963 as a teacher of music and physical education at Sunset Mesa Day School. She then taught remedial reading at Zia Elementary School and secondary developmental reading at Rio Grande High School. In 1969, Dr. Tonjes became a research assistant in reading at the Southwestern Cooperative Educational Laboratory in Albuquerque.

Continuing to advance professionally, Dr. Tonjes accepted a position as associate director and visiting instructor at the Florida Center for Teacher Training Materials at the University of Miami in 1971. She then relocated to California to work as an assistant professor at U.S. International University in San Diego before joining the faculty of Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. in 1975. While teaching at Western Washington University, Dr. Tonjes also directed the summer study at Oxford University's Oriel College from 1976 to 1993.

Despite the fact that she retired from Western Washington University in 1994, Dr. Tonjes continued to teach as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico since 1995. She has also served as a consultant in the field and was invited to be the keynote banquet speaker at the American Reading Forum in Sanibel, Fla in 2008. Furthermore, Dr. Tonjes spoke at the European Conference in Reading in Tallinn, Estonia in 2003, and she served as symposium chair at the World Congress in Manila in 2004.

Dr. Tonjes applied her expertise to co-author the books "Integrated Content Literacy," published in 1999 with a 5th edition published in 2006, "Teaching Reading, Thinking, Study Skills in Content Classrooms," published in 1992, and "Secondary Reading, Writing and Learning," published in 1991. She has also been active in membership and leadership roles with numerous professional affiliations, including the American Reading Forum, the International Reading Association, and the European Council of International Schools, among others. Her past civic positions include trustee of The White Mountain School and honorary trustee of Lomonosov School. She was named Alumnae Volunteer of the Year at The White Mountain School in 2006, and nominated for the honor of Outstanding Alumnae of McDaniel College in 2005.

As a result of her many efforts, endeavors and achievements, Dr. Tonjes was chosen to be featured in the 48th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, the 6th and 8th editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 21st through 31st editions of Who's Who in the West. She has also appeared in multiple editions of Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
