Mr. Clark began his writing career after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in 1951. After serving with the U.S. Naval Reserve for two years, he joined the Boston Traveler, a daily newspaper, as a reporter in 1953. He remained with the publication until 1958, spending the last two years as science editor. He also served as a writer for Medical News magazine in New York City from 1958 to 1961, and for the next 27 years, 1961 to 1988, as medicine writer and editor for Newsweek magazine.
As a result of his excellence in writing, Mr. Clark has received a number of awards and formal honors. He received two Albert Lasker Medical Journalism Awards in the 1960s, three Penney-Missouri Journalism Awards between 1967 and 1975, and four Howard W. Blakeslee Awards from the American Heart Association between 1965 and 1983. Mr. Clark was a recipient of a Medical Journalism Award from the American Medical Association in 1969, the Claude Bernard Science Journalism Award from the National Society of Medical Research in 1971, a Media Award from the American Cancer Society in 1976, and a New York Deadline Club Award in 1977. In 1983, he was honored with both the James T. Grady Award from the American Chemical Society and a Journalism Award from the American Medical Writers Association.
